“… for those of us that have walked through the daunting mental health woods Clay so cleverly reconstructs, it is gratifying just to visit the game for an afternoon, press the big yellow button, and tell the demons “not today.”

What I'm About

I create sensory-inclusive art inspired by sci-fi and horror stories. I aim to confront and understand fear and anxiety, both for myself and others. Through my art, I provide welcoming experiences with the unknown. Using inviting textiles and remade creatures from these stories, I offer a unique pathway for people to approach these complex emotions. My work allows individuals to touch, hear, and immerse themselves in a safe space to experience uncertainty. Ultimately, I want to make the process of confronting mental health challenges less intimidating and more approachable. It's about empowering individuals, including myself, to navigate uncertainty with curiosity and resilience, rather than succumbing to fear and avoidance.

About Me

Born in 1985 in Mountain View, NC, I earned a BFA from UNCC Charlotte and an MFA from UFL in 2014. After relocating to South Florida, I showcased work at the Girls' Club Collection, ICA Miami, MOCA North Miami, and Miami Light Box. Notable projects include "Nearing" (2017) and "Welcome to You&Me" (2019), created for neurodiverse audiences.

During my studio residency at Oolite Arts, they documented a short of my practice, "The Texture of Anxiety" which won a regional Emmy. I debuted a quilt-composed video game and installation at Locust Projects in 2023 that was funded by the Knight Foundation Award. My art features sewn textiles portraying non-human figures. Inspired by supernatural cosmic horror stories and folklore, I aim to create a comforting atmosphere while addressing themes of fear and anxiety. I am based in Miami and am represented by Emerson Dorsch Gallery.
